I would like to say a very big thank you to a lovely young lady who unknowingly gave my mum a lovely memory on the last 24 hours of her life.
After celebrating my late father’s birthday on Wednesday and reminiscing with my mother as dad died in July three years ago, I was pushing my Mum (seated on her wheelie walker) and a trolley load of groceries, through Clifford Garden Shopping Centre when a group of young girls walked past.
One of the young ladies stopped, turned back and approached my mother and asked if she would mind if she gave her the bunch of flowers she was holding. I asked her if she had bought them for a special occasion or for her own mother. She replied no, and that her mother lived a long way away. She just felt that she wanted to give my Mum “who looks like a lovely lady” the flowers.
Mum accepted the flowers with a beautiful smile telling her that she had not long turned ninety years young. Thanking her for the flowers we continued on our way not knowing who the girl was but appreciating the gesture as Mum loves flowers (Dad preferred vegetables in the garden). The flowers were put in pride of place in a vase on the china cabinet and drew Mum’s eyes throughout the evening and commenting about the spontaneous act of giving her the flowers.
Mum joined Dad in heaven this morning and I took the flowers down to the dining table at the aged care village at teatime and informed the residents that my mother had passed away.
I told them of the story of how the flowers had come into our possession. They thought it was lovely and enjoyed the pleasure of the flowers on the table while they ate and talked of their memories of Mum and their own experiences and of the young ones they knew that had performed an act of kindness. The single spontaneous act of a young lady has bought joy to not one, but many elderly people and I sincerely thank her hoping she gets to hear of our appreciation for her act of kindness.
